A Week at Planet Hollywood Adult Scene by Royalton, Cancún, Mexico

Sun, sea, and carefree days made for the perfect beach escape.

After our usual activity-packed trips, every once in a while we like to book a relaxing beach vacation with no planning involved. Considering our positive past experiences in Cuba and Mexico, we decided to spend an all-inclusive week at Planet Hollywood Adult Scene by Royalton resort, located on Costa Mujeres, Quintana Roo, Mexico. While Costa Mujeres is part of the greater Cancun area, Playa Costa Mujeres is quite unique—the resorts here are all high-end, the beaches are wider and cleaner, and the sand and water quality are noticeably better than most of the Cancun coastline.

Arrival and Check-in

The package we chose included everything—flights, airport transfers, accommodation, food, and drinks. We were picked up at Cancun Airport, and it took a little over an hour drive to get to the resort. The resort has a phone application that can be used for restaurant reservations, bars menus and more. The bracelet we got at check-in was also the room entry tag which was very convenient.

The check-in procedure was very smooth, and in no time we were in our assigned room. The room was one of the best we’ve ever had—very large, modern, with lots of amenities, a daily stocked fridge, and plenty of towels changed every day. We arrived late in the evening after dark, but the next morning, to our surprise, we discovered we had a partial ocean (technically Caribbean Sea) view, which we enjoyed daily in the afternoon from our balcony.

Beach

The resort has more pools than we’ve ever seen before, and the vast majority of guests preferred to stay at the pool, but we always like the beach. The beach itself was amazing, with fine white sand that felt soft underfoot. On the first day, we got to the beach a little late and could only find chairs without umbrellas, but the following days we went before breakfast and easily reserved beach chairs with umbrellas. The resort was the first we’ve been to provide beach towels without restrictions, ID, or liability requirements—a small detail, but one we really appreciated. One thing to note is that the beach faces east, so only the sunrise is over the water, which made early mornings especially nice. The water was generally warm, though some days were windy and the waves made swimming less ideal. One detail worth mentioning is that the beach is perfect for long walks, which we actually did daily and enjoyed a lot.

Food and Drinks

The food was also among the best we’ve ever had at an all-inclusive beach resort, perhaps on par with our Alaska cruises. There was a wide and constant variety of seafood, meats, vegetables, fruits, and desserts, including both local Mexican dishes and international options. The buffet even had amazing sushi and sashimi, which we really enjoyed. While there were several a-la-carte restaurants, we valued our time and the variety, so the buffet was the best option for us. On a similar note, the drinks were just okay—the cocktails weren’t particularly memorable, so we mainly stuck with plain beverages, always available at all resort bars.

Entertainment and Activities

For us, one of the weaker aspects of the resort was the entertainment. It was okay, but not quite on par with the other positives. Each evening featured different themed shows, but some relied too heavily on the backdrop screen, making it feel like watching a movie on a giant TV. Again, it wasn’t bad, but we’ve seen much better shows on some of our previous similar trips. There were also daily pool activities such as foam parties, trivia, and other games, but since we preferred staying at the beach, we didn’t participate in most of them.

Resort Atmosphere and Facilities

Thanks to the Planet Hollywood brand, the entire resort had a Hollywood-themed decor. Famous movie boards, statues, and decorations made you feel like you were inside a blockbuster film. The resort also featured a shopping area with small boutiques where we could find some nice souvenirs. Additional facilities included a spa, a full size cinema theater, a gaming area called Planet Play, muscle car racing at Fast Drive, a Guy Fiery burger joint open daily without reservation, a very well-equipped fitness center, a beautiful splash park in the family area, and more—something for every taste. For the first time in a Mexican resort, we liked the fact that there were no vendors to constantly offer you things to buy, not inside the resort nor on the beach. One evening some local vendors were allowed to setup booths in a designated area, all very well organized. Worth mentioning was the staff’s friendliness; everywhere and at all times, we were treated with smiles and quick responses.

Seaweed and Beach Conditions

One thing we were concerned about, based on previous trips to the Mexican Caribbean, was the abundance of seaweed (sargassum) on the beach and in the water. From November to April, this area is supposed to be the best time to visit for less sargassum. In early March we did find some, more than we would have liked, but the resort did a good job of removing it daily from the beach. It wasn’t as bad as on previous Cancun-area trips, but the beach wasn’t quite as pristine as on Mexico’sPacific coast or in Cuba. Some pictures are taken on unmaintained areas between resorts to better understand the magnitude of the issue.

Final Thoughts

Overall, we were very pleased with this trip. It was one of our most expensive beach vacations—over 4,000 CAD for the two of us—but we feel it was worth every penny.
